Pittsburgh Software Process Improvement Network (SPIN) The Most Livable SPIN in the USA invites you to our first program of the season. Meeting Announcement 6:30 - 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 28, 1994 Software Engineering Institute Agenda 6:30 - 7:00 SPIN Business - Don McAndrews 7:00 - 7:30 Refreshments/Networking 7:30 - 8:45 Invited Speaker - Bill Peterson 8:45 - 9:00 Questions/Survey Our special guest is Bill Peterson, Director of the SEI Process Program. He will present: The Capability Maturity Model for Software and Software Process Improvement. Bill's biography is attached. Abstract: Improving software processes has led to substantial cost, schedule and quality improvement for a number of companies. Software process improvement builds on the principles of total quality management (TQM) and the teachings of Edward Deming, Joseph Juran and Phil Crosby. These principles are embedded in the Capability Maturity Model for Software (CMM). In this talk, Bill Peterson gives an overview of the SEI's CMM and the IDEAL (Initiating, Diagnosing, Establishing, Acting, and Leveraging) approach to implementing software process improvement. He also presents some of the improvement results discovered by several companies who have initiated and measured the results of software process improvement programs. Following Bill's talk, we will complete a survey that will give the SPIN Steering Committee additional information about the backgrounds of our membership. This meeting and the results of the survey will set the stage for the remainder of the SPIN season as we put together our programs to address YOUR software process improvement needs. Please post this notice, distribute it broadly, and extend this invitation to your colleagues who may be interested in software process improvement. We need people who can contribute their knowledge, experience, time, and/or ideas to make this SPIN successful. Anyone interested may attend; however, for logistical purposes, please RSVP by September 23 if you plan to attend. RSVP Don McAndrews e-mail: drm@vaxa.switch.com phone: (412) 369-2328 fax: (412) 369-2399 If you can not attend but are interested, please contact me and I will forward information on our next SPIN meeting. NOTE: We will be collecting $3 per attendee to cover expenses (mailing, refreshments, etc.) MISSION: The Pittsburgh SPIN is a group of professionals who share a common interest in the field of software engineering and software process improvement. The SPIN is a forum for free and open exchange of software process improvement experiences and ideas. We promote mutual respect, software quality, and achieving higher levels of process maturity. Our mission is to help sustain commitment and enhance skills through an active program of networking, publications, recognition of excellence, and mutual support. . . . . . . . . . . . . Biographical Information Bill Peterson Bill Peterson is the Director of the Software Process Program at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI). This program works with organizations throughout government, industry, and academia to transition proven process management techniques into practice. Mr. Peterson's current thrusts are to transition the SEI's Capability Maturity Model (CMM) for Software into the state of the practice through the IDEAL (Initiating, Diagnosing, Establishing, Acting, and Leveraging) framework. His interests lie in providing SEI process products and services, as well as evaluating and reporting on the benefits of software process improvement that result from the transitioning of the models. Mr. Peterson has over 23 years of industry experience, with the IBM Corporation. With IBM, he held several roles as both Software Manager as well as orchestrating process improvement activities. Most of this experience is in the areas of managing software projects, in software process definition and management, and teaching software engineering. Mr. Peterson received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1969 with emphasis in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from Cornell University. He was project leader of the CMM Project and has represented the SEI at software conferences and panels on software process. He currently is an active member of the SEI's CMM Advisory Board and the Process Program Advisory Board.
