RENAISSANCE CITY CHOIRS PRESENT "YULE BE GAY! SONGS FOR THE
HOLIDAYS"
The Renaissance City Choirs will present "Yule Be Gay! Songs for the
Holidays" at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 9, 2000 at East Liberty
Presbyterian Church, 116 S. Highland Avenue, East Liberty. This 16th
annual holiday concert starts the holiday season off in style and
celebrates the music of the seasonal holidays performed as only the
Renaissance City Choirs can. Advance tickets for the concert are
$15 for adults or $7.50 for children 12 and under and can be
purchased through ProArts ticketing service (412) 394-3353. Tickets
also may be purchased at the door on the evening of the performance
for $18. For additional information, call the Renaissance City
Choirs at (412) 362-9484.
"Yule Be Gay! Songs for the Holidays" includes performances by both
the Renaissance City Men's Choir and the Renaissance City Women's
Choir. The concert features the full Renaissance City Choirs
performing as a mixed chorus as well as individual programs by the
men's and women's choirs. The program includes both well-known
traditional holiday pieces as well as other works given the unique
RCC spin. From the plaintive yet haunting chant of Durufle's "Ubi
Caritas" to the full choir's rousing audience-participatory
rendition of "The 12 Days of Christmas," the program features music
of all of the seasonal holidays from Christmas to Hanukkah,
Solstice to Kwanzaa.
The selections in the program were chosen to highlight the growth of
choir, both artistically and numerically. According to Susan Haugh,
Artistic Director of the Renaissance City Women's Choir, "The women
have experienced a growth spurt! With a large number of talented
women joining the choir this September and many seasoned singers
our sound has matured. This year, as never before, we are featuring
11 singers as soloists with many different styles, and we also have
one small ensemble." Darlene Durrwachter Rushing, Artistic Director
of the Renaissance City Men's Choir, echoed the sentiments. "The
men's selections highlight our tremendous musical development over
the past several years. The concert will include traditional
Spanish and French carols as well as a jazzy, intense version of
'Let It Snow.' All showcase a choir that has grown and matured."
According to Durrwachter Rushing, however, "mature" does not mean
trading the choir's hallmark sense of fun: "Our rendition of >
'Christmas Cheer' is bound to make your yuletide gay."
All performances are sign language interpreted for the hearing
impaired. The Renaissance City Choirs/Pittsburgh Gay Chorus is a
100 member volunteer choir comprising the Renaissance City Men's
Choir, Darlene Durrwachter Rushing, Artistic Director, and the
Renaissance City Women's Choir, Susan Haugh, Artistic Director. In
addition to the three principal concerts each year, the choirs also
perform throughout the year, presenting a variety of programs
ranging from traditional choral repertoire to more contemporary
works. The Renaissance City Choirs proudly position themselves as
Gays and Lesbians creating change through the power of music.
