About the orignal ideas, lots of work have been done on various platforms in various systems by various institutions. ActiveX and Java are not concentrated on the same point. Java is more on VM. It's a different idea from COM. Someone said that, very soon, COBOL, C, etc. will have bytecode-oriented compilers, so Java will lose its advantages. That's completely wrong, since whether a language will succeed is not only determined by its functionalities, but more on it's de facto prevalence( as COBOL) , or on its fitness with the situations( such as Internet). Yeas, I believe no languages are good enough to say it will be the standard. Can you say C is better than COBOL, or Pascal is better than C? definitely not, though they all can be compiled to X86 codes. So IMHO, I believe, with the two characteristics:(1) grand propagandation; (2)suitable for Browser(in fact Internet). Java will get success in some context. Although you can provide M$ as an exception, Bill Gates surely want grasp JAVA. This can be clear if you understand why IE4.0 would like to be charged $1M/day rather than surrenders.
