INPRISE ANNOUNCES BORLAND DELPHI 4
COM, CORBA, MTS, and Oracle8 Support Now Make Delphi the Leading Windows
Rapid Application Development Tool for Building Distributed Enterprise
Applications
NEW YORK -- June 15, 1998 --Inprise Corporation (NASDAQ: INPR) today
announced Borland Delphi 4, a major new version of its award-winning rapid
application development tool for Windows. Designed to help corporations
deliver large scale "enterprise-class" business applications faster,
Delphi 4 radically simplifies the integration of client, middleware and
database development. Delphi 4 now includes support for both CORBA and COM,
the leading distributed computing standards, as well as the Microsoft
Transaction Server (MTS) and the new Oracle8 database server. Delphi is
scheduled to be available next month in the following versions: Delphi 4
Client/Server Suite, Delphi 4 Professional and Delphi 4 Standard.
"Delphi 4 is the latest step in Inprise Corporation's strategy to help
corporations worldwide develop, deploy, and manage distributed enterprise
applications," said Zack Urlocker, Inprise's vice president of marketing.
"Delphi is the first rapid application development tool that improves the
scalability and performance of COM and CORBA-based distributed applications."
"Developers in search of highly productive tools to build distributed
multitier application requirements will find Delphi 4.0 right on the mark,"
said InfoWorld magazine in a June 15, 1998 product review. "Support for
distributed multitier applications is well implemented using industry
standards that will work in the most heterogeneous of environments."
Multi-tier distributed applications: Any data, any time, anywhere
Delphi 4 includes a number of enhancements that allow organizations to
integrate data from throughout their enterprise and make it available on
any desktop at any time, including:
MIDAS (Multi-Tier Distributed Application Services), which enables
organizations to communicate and share enterprise data through multi-tier
applications. MIDAS speeds the development and maintenance of distributed
applications by handling communication among database servers, middle tier
business rules and clients with advanced remote data brokering and efficient
data packet technology. MIDAS provides solutions for heterogeneous
environments, with support for CORBA and Java clients.
One-Step CORBA and COM support gives organizations maximum flexibility and
scalability to develop both CORBA and COM object-based applications. MIDAS
servers support the COM and CORBA infrastructures, allowing organizations
to deploy their distributed applications.
Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) support includes a MTS Component Wizard
and the MTS Deployment Wizard that let corporations secure easy transaction
management within any application.
"The seamless integration of CORBA services into the COM/DCOM-based MIDAS
technology in Delphi 4 gives our Delphi-based multi-tier application
projects tremendous credibility and renewed life in terms of reuse," said
Bernie Crisostomo, vice president for Technical Architecture in Global
Finance Decision Support for NationsBank. "With Delphi 4, we now have the
opportunity to strategically leverage our robust Delphi components to
interoperate in a truly platform-neutral and language-neutral context.
After all, it is a critical requirement of our recent large-scale mergers
and acquisitions to reap immediate benefits by integrating and
interoperating our diverse systems and information very efficiently."
Oracle8 support: Delphi 4 is the first rapid application development tool
that includes high performance database support for Oracle8, including
object relational extensions. Delphi 4's native support for the latest
release of Oracle's database engine ensures that organizations can make
rapid use of this technology throughout an enterprise.
"We are delighted with the comprehensive Oracle8 support provided in
Delphi 4," said Tim Payne, director of database server marketing at Oracle
Corporation. "The combination of Delphi and Oracle8 allows enterprise
developers to manage the complexity of their business processes, respond
quickly to changes, make better use of information and leverage their
investments in people and information technology."
Enhanced developer productivity To reduce development cycle time and
increase productivity, Delphi 4 now includes the following enhancements:
AppBrowser IDE, which simplifies the process of reading, writing and
browsing code.
Advanced project manager, which lets developers save time by seamlessly
compiling their projects to multiple targets.
New debugging technologies, including include a module view, event logs,
data watch breakpoints, debug inspector, local variable inspection,
integrated DLL debugging, and remote debugging.
New language enhancements, including method overloading, dynamic arrays,
and 64-bit integers.
"The new advanced Delphi debugging features will significantly reduce our
debugging time," said Peter Antoniou, senior developer at Omega Legal
Systems in Phoenix. "But the three-tier distributed application pieces of
Delphi 4 are going to be the biggest things for us. We like having a
choice of CORBA and COM/DCOM with the same tool; so we can experiment with
both and maintain maximum flexibility as we chart our course going forward."
Windows enhancements, including Windows 98 common controls
Delphi 4 includes many enhancements for advanced Windows development,
including docking, tool bars, and new Windows 98 common controls. Delphi 4
also includes two new Windows NT services that provide developers with the
ability to build applications that run in the background and automatically
start up with the start up of the operating system.
"We are pleased with Delphi's support for MTS, SQL Server, IIS, COM and DCOM," a
id Vic Gundotra, director of platform marketing at Microsoft Corporation. "Delpi
provides developers with support for Microsoft services as they build applicato
ns and
complete solutions for the Windows platform. A key focus at Microsoft is interoe
rability in the enterprise and Inprise will be helping developers deliver on tht
promise."
"Delphi 4's Windows enhancements like toolbar docking and the powerful new compn
ents to support Windows 98 features make it easy to build state-of-the-art useri
nterfaces," said Robert Vivrette, senior programmer analyst at Pacific Gas and l
ectric
Company. "We are excited about the new AppBrowser IDE and component enhancement.
Delphi 4 will make our development team even more efficient."
