Braly Pond Bank Restoration Saturday, April 21, 2012 Volunteers Needed Come enjoy early spring at Braly Pond! This beautiful Boulder County Open Space property has great views of the foothills and Longs Peak. The site is adjacent to the Saint Vrain River, a corridor of huge trees, and home to bald eagles that nest nearby. This is a unique opportunity to see this piece of property that is currently closed to the public. Eventually, Braly Pond will be part of the St. Vrain Greenway Trail from Longmont to Lyons. HISTORY There are seven ponds on site, all reclaimed gravel quarries, offering excellent birding opportunities. Large wind driven waves pound the east shore at times, causing severe erosion, and degrading shoreline wildlife habitat. If this is not stopped, the problem will get worse and worse as the shoreline erodes away. This is a great example of how gravel quarries can be restored into wildlife habitat and then into space for public recreation. VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES Volunteers will plant thousands of willows and install coir log barriers to protect the shoreline and enhance habitat for birds and other wildlife. The coir logs provide short term protection and the willows will stabilize the pond bank long term. COME ON AND JOIN US April will be the perfect time to get outdoors and plant and celebrate spring with the WRV community! Register for this Project
