The World Resources Institute (WRI) has recently published a study (The Immune System: the Public Health Risks) linking exposure to pesticides to alterations in the human immune system. An author of the WRI report, Dr. Repetto has stated, "We are calling on the World Health Organization to spearhead a large-scale research program into links between pesticides and damage to the immune system, and on major pesticide companies, multilateral banks, and the W.H.O.'s member governments to finance this important public health campaign." The report recommends substantially stronger government surveillance and controls over the use of potentially immuno-toxic pesticides, especially in developing countries. Pesticide products should be thoroughly tested for immuno-toxicity as a condition of continued registration of products for sale. The riskiest compounds should be effectively banned. The World Resources Institute is an independent center for policy research and technical assistance on global environmental and development issues. ================================= Copies of PESTICIDES AND THE IMMUNE SYSTEM: THE PUBLIC RISKS are available for $14.95 plus $3.50 for shipping and handling from WRI Publications P.O.
