SLIP (On A Stick)
A Low cost Dial-up IP Router
------------------------------------------------
FUNCTIONS:
o Connects TCP/IP hosts/networks over standard telephone lines
o Manages an external modem
o Logs into terminal servers or hosts, invokes SLIP/CSLIP protocol
o Rebuilds / maintains connections as desired
o Restricts packet forwarding for security
FEATURES:
o RIP (Routing Information Protocol)
o SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol)
o BSD SysLog (Berkeley UNIX logging facility)
o ACLs (Access Control Lists)
o Call Filtering (What traffic causes connections to be built)
o Inbound Telnet
o Boots from EPROM or via TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol)
o PPP available 2Q93
ADVANTAGES:
o A turn-key solution to dial-up IP networking
o Dedicated phone line not required
o Stand-alone operation (no software to install on your hosts)
o Easy to support & configure
o Low purchase and maintenance costs
o No special setup of application hosts
o Inexpensive firmware upgrades
o Adapts to virtually any IP host or network
o Secure
GENERAL:
Cogwheel is pleased to announce Slip-On-A-Stick, a new dial-up IP
router designed specifically to meet the needs of organizations
either wishing to build private TCP/IP internetworks, or connect to
the global Internetwork in the easiest, lowest cost manner possible.
This compact, book-size device attaches to your TCP/IP Ethernet LAN
and an external modem. It works by dialing the modem automatically
and converting the TCP/IP traffic on your Ethernet into the SLIP,
CSLIP or PPP(2Q93) protocols for transmission by the modem. On
the remote side, any server which supports one of these protocols
may be used. The result is transparent connectivity for any TCP/IP
application running on any host on your local LAN.
LOWEST COST INTERNETWORKING
Slip-On-A-Stick is the lowest cost dial-up IP router available.
Since it doesn't require expensive dedicated leased lines, Dial-up
IP is the lowest cost method of internetworking available.
Together, Slip-On-A-Stick provides an unbeatable combination of
low purchase cost and low monthly line charges. Slip-On-A-Stick is
the best choice for applications requiring internetwork connectivity
at the lowest possible cost.
ADAPTS TO VARIETY OF SERVERS
Slip-On-A-Stick can adapt to a wide variety of operating
requirements. It attaches to both AUI Drop Ethernet and Thin
Ethernet (Cheapernet). On the serial side, it can handle speeds up
to 38 kbps (higher rates available soon) and provides for full
modem control. Slip-On-A-Stick employs an extremely flexible
"chat script" feature which enables it to work with virtually any
modem and virtually any server on the remote end. Plus, it's
simple to configure, and imposes no special requirements on
application hosts or the LAN.
SECURE
Slip-On-A-Stick can filter packets based on IP source, destination,
protocol, service port, and even time-of-day. Also, Slip-On-A-Stick
can be setup to require a password before granting access to
its configuration functions
DEDICATED PHONE LINE NOT REQUIRED
Slip-On-A-Stick can economize on telephone charges by building
connections only when needed. Connections may be built "on demand"
(when packets arrive), at specific times-of-the-day, or at boot
(for continuous connectivity). Call length is completely
programmable (there are several ways to configure it). If your
applications do not require continuous connectivity, the same phone
line may be shared with other devices, such as a FAX.
