QuickTime movies

I am working on a project that could involve some video work. I'd like
some information on taking video and inputing it into the Mac, in
QuickTime form or MPEG format. Does anyone know how to do this? Is there
a simple way to go about this. Any shareware software that handles this?
I would think that it would be done similar to recording sound, but I
can't find anything that allows me to do this. I've checked out Apple's
QT page, but there's nothing about how to actually make a movie, only
how to run it.
