SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. -- May 14, 1996 To better provide Macintosh users worldwide information and software, the moderators who maintain the Info-Mac Internet Archive along with Pacific HiTech, Inc. today announced a World Wide Web site dedicated to the archive. The Info-Mac Archive is the largest collection of Macintosh shareware and freeware (over 2.0 gigabytes) serving the Macintosh community for over ten years. Info-Mac is run solely on a volunteer effort working daily to gather and organize hundreds of programs a month, made available on 'mirrors' (or copies) of the site worldwide. The new World Wide Web site will provide information to new users of the site and the Internet on to how to access the software, posting guidelines, detailed instructions for uploading software to the site, mirror locations, information about the Info-Mac Digest (a semi-daily periodical that provides a forum for Macintosh users of all levels and announcements of new additions to the site), and much more. Links are also provided to highlight search engines dedicated to Info-Mac that allow searches for specific files or information from the Info-Mac Digest. This site is desgined to be a central source for a wide variety Macintosh resources. The site was created with the help of Pacific HiTech and will be located there. Pacific HiTech is a longtime supporter of Info-Mac and is the exclusive distributor of CD-ROMs of the archive, producing Info-Mac titles since 1992. The Info-Mac Archive is moving forward in its previously announced relocation from its current home at Stanford to MIT on its new machine donated by America OnLine. Contributors will have already noticed files can submitted to this new machine at info-mac.org. Once there, Info-Mac will grow significantly due to increased capacity. "There is no question that more software is being developed for the Macintosh and made freely available than ever before, with submissions to the site being made at an increasing rate," said the archivist of the site. "We have nearly ten thousand programs and that number is only limited by space, which will change soon." The site is located at <http://www.pht.com/info-mac/>. It will be kept up to date, continuing to provide that latest information and the most and newest software available. The Info-Mac moderators are currently Liam Breck, Gordon Watts, Adam Engst, and Demitri Muna. Neither MIT nor Stanford University is affiliated with the Info-Mac Network or Pacific HiTech in any way.
