In article <10633@uqcspe.cs.uq.oz.au> gjn@cs.uq.oz.au writes: >I personally don't view such pictures for various reasons, and can see why >others would be offended by the act. I cannot see how others can be offended by *my* viewing of anything. If *they* view it, *they* might be offended, which is their privilege. >All I need to do is tell someone that such and such a gif is a not a good one >to be stored, because if it offends someone, they would complain, and the >management would ask for all gifs to be removed (they don't view them - and >we are always pushed for disk space). So, if I understand you, the mere presence of a GIF of nude people is de facto offensive, on the systems you administer? >As for people having gifs in their home directories, when the disk get full >I go "find(1)ing" for anything that resembles core files, databases and gifs >(among other things). If I find gifs I tell them to put them in the system >area (subject to my opinion of whether they may be offensive) or offline them. This seems more reasonable - removal of large files based solely on utility and size. I do question the (legalistic) wisdom of using your opinion as the criterion of offensiveness - someone else might be very bluenosed and take offense at a Sports Illustrated GIF. Also, if there is NOT a disk space shortage, do users get to keep any GIFs they desire in their local directories? -- Pete Hardie: phardie@nastar (voice) (404) 497-0101 Digital Transmission Systems, Inc., Duluth GA Member, DTS Dart Team | cat * | egrep -v "signature virus|infection" Position: Goalie |
