A lot of people here would like freedom of speech to be guaranteed. You'd
be suprised just how much you can't say in the UK (official secrets act,
etc) - you can't find out what the military doing (as if they know themselves0
you can't even force people like British Nuclear Fuels (the guys who gave
windscale such a bad name they called it sellafield instead) to release
information. We no freedom of information, even goverment records don't
get released for many years after, and anything sensitive can be held
back for ever.

I wouldn't get too smug over the pond though. You've got rules against
hate speech already, and rules stopping free discussion of homosexuality
and even evolution and abortion just simmering on the sidelines to become
fully implemented. And don't forget all of the other free speech issues,
go into a us army barracks and explain to them that you are gay, or a
communist - thats censorship too, censorship by fear. Don't ever
forget the man who said 'A free country is one in which it is safe to be
unpopular'. Now remember american history, McCarthy for example. Nobody
really has free speech, and there is an awful lot of fighting to be done.
Also don't assume freedom of speech is an American thing only - we want
it here, a lot of americans would like it in the USA too..

I think I shall get off my soapbox now before they come and take me away...

Those are not speech issues - you can call yourself anything you like in an
army barracks, and (except in boot camp) nothing official can happen to you
unless you are proven to be such things.

Now, it is an ethical issue whether gays should be allowed in the military, but
not a free speech one.
