The American Society for Information Science (ASIS)
Potomac Valley Chapter Winter Workshop
Monday, March 8, 1993
REINVENTING INFORMATION SERVICES:
Information Technology's Impact on the Organization
As a follow-up to the ASIS PVC mini-symposium -- Changing Organizational
Structures and the Information Provider -- the 1993 Winter Workshop will
delve more deeply into the effects of information access on organizations.
We will examine how the new information systems and technologies affect
organization structures -- and overall implications to society. While
Joseph Contes stated "No one who designs, builds, or maintains a complex
system understands what it can do" (Journal of Professional Ethics, 1982),
we as information practitioners can start to understand and appreciate the
changes being made to our organizations by these systems and envision how
we can act as "change agents."
This meeting is designed for all information professionals, not only for
practicing librarians and information specialists. Individuals
responsible for their organization's computing functions, as well as those
that serve as information "accessors" or "gatekeepers," will find this
meeting helpful and stimulating. The program will begin with a
presentation by Dr. Perloff who will then moderate a wide-ranging
discussion between the other panelists. This portion of the program will
be exciting as well as provocative -- given the free form of exchange
among the presenters. The panelists include:
Dr. Robert Perloff, President of the Knowledge Utilization
Society and Professor Emeritus of the Katz School of Business,
University of Pittsburgh
Dr. David Penniman, Executive Director of the Council of
Library Resources and Past President of the American Society for
Information Science
Dr. Marion Ball, Assistant Vice President for Information
Services, University of Maryland at Baltimore
Following lunch there will be a formal presentation on management's
awareness and reaction to the changes organizations face due to the
implementation of new information technologies. Next, a panel of
middle-level managers from industry, the nonprofit sector, and government
will discuss how they are coping with the need for change and how they
have managed change in their own organization.
