Should Alums have access to school accounts?

At out college, alumni have free access to every school facility but one.
They are currently not allowed to have accounts on our mainframe. I have
been proposing (for the sake of some alum friends) that that rule be changed
so that LOCAL area alums or alums who are staying in the area can have
temporary accounts. I consider this to be an ok plan considering that alums
have all the other facilities available. I would like to know what the
policies concerning this are for other colleges and universities. Please
post here or email me. Thanks in advance.

I believe that one University in Colorado - Colorado State University?,
University of Colorado at Fort Collins? - has a "lifetime" account.

There, from what I gather, education, and hence computing, are seen as
life long ventures, and they would like to have their alumni keep
coming back. Sure, maybe only 1% uses the resource -- but 1% would
be an excellent response rate for alumni. If it were 10%, that
would be astounding! And a major coup.

Here at 'Southern, it's my understanding that alums are allowed to keep their
HP-9000 accounts. I think our director of Academic Computing reads this group,
he might chime in with a relevant bit or two.

I *might* be concerned about alumni using university resources for corporate
purposes.

Some vendors stipulate 'educational use only' when they donate equipment
and/or software. If alumni start doing research for their employers on
university equipment, you might run into some problems.....

I would think that a simple 'no commercial use' agreement with the alumnus
would eliminate such problems......

It strikes me that the alums should follow the same computing use
policy as the students, and that a "no commercial use" policy would
apply equally to students and alumni.

We do not currently allow alumni to keep their accounts after they leave
(other than it is a year after graduation that we `figure out' that they
are gone). I have been pushing to allow alumni to keep their accounts
without luck so far, but now I have an unexpected ally -- the Engineering
College Placement Office has moved their services onto our system -- and
they offer their services to graduates for life... :-)

As a recent graduate myself, I've found that my account is a great
resource for job hunting. If for no other reason then this, I'd hope
Universities and their placement centers encourage recent alumns to use
it as such.

As we prepare to get on the internet, we are considering also considering
the issue of alum access. The alumni association wishes to keep in contact
with as many individuals as possible, and is attempting to find out how many
of our alumni have some form of e-mail access, and how many would use it for
contacts.

Our previous system was a Data General MV/10000, and we did provide limited
resources to alums. Accounts were limited with respect to disk space, and
ran at a lower priority than regular student accounts. Major concerns were
commercial usage - strictly prohibited by state regulations - and
recreational usage (games :-) interfering with academic usage. Since the
machine was not connected to external networks, it had few other attractions.

The solution was not entirely satisfactory, and few people used it on a
regular basis. One interesting item - people who had used the previous
computer system (an HP-2000) did not transition well to the DG. This is
most likely a common problem - supporting remote users who rarely, if ever,
come into the computer center, when major system changes occur.

I'm a bit envious of those of you who say "Give the Alumni Association
a spare workstation." At this time, we have one workstation for our
Internet connection, and several AT&T 3B2's for DOS networking and UNIX
classroom support. Quite frankly, the UNIX environment has not been
particularly popular here, in a liberal arts environment, and it's
difficult to generate support for resources used by a very small fraction
of the community.

My personal inclination is to observe resource utilization for a quarter
or two, and then offer alum access. I expect this to require a bit of
a selling job with management :-)

Has anyone had any really negative experiences, or problems, such as
administrative overhead, support headaches, etc.?

This is an issue of policy, not resources. If you believe the POLICY
should be to give accounts to alumni, that's the important thing. Let
the Alumni Association BUY their own machine (or get an alum who works
for a computer company to donate one).
