5th German Workshop on Artificial Life (GWAL-5)
Call for Papers
http://www.inb.mu-luebeck.de/gwal5/
************************************************************************
Aims and Scope
--------------
Artificial Life is an interdisciplinary field of science focused on
abstracting the essential features and dynamics of living systems in order
to create artificial, life-like systems. The 2002 German Workshop on
Artificial Life is intended to provide the opportunity for scientists from a
broad spectrum of research areas to get in touch with their colleagues from
different disciplines, to learn from one another about questions of mutual
interest. Equally importantly, the workshop is intended as a forum for
scientists who would like to get into contact with the Artificial Life
community.
Contributions to the GWAL 2002 are of interest to biologists, physicists,
information and computer sciencists, chemists, mathematicians, and much
more. There will be talks and poster sessions, covering but not limited to
topics like artificial chemistries, simulations of ecological and evolving
systems, self-organization, swarm intelligence, autonomous robots, complex
and dynamical systems, information processing in biology. In addition to
talks and posters, workgroups will be an integral part of the GWAL.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to
* Modelling of biological processes in evolutionary biology,
ecology, developmental biology, immunology, cell biology and
molecular biology
* Systems biology
* Adaptive behaviour, pattern recognition, perception and evolution
of sensors, morphology and actuators, learning and intelligence
in biological and artificial systems
* Complexity and its emergence in biological processes
* Self-organization in living and life-like systems (e.g. swarms,
hypercycles, multicellular systems, artificial multi-agent
systems)
* Dynamics of information in living and life-like systems
* Application of principles of life (e.g. self-organization,
evolution, adaptation, learning and intelligence) to the design
of artificial systems and technical solutions (e.g. robots,
hardware, and software
* Epistemological foundations for sciences investigating living
systems
Fostering interdisciplinary interactions is an important element of
the GWAL. Therefore, contributions are especially solicited from
fields which have recently started adopting Artificial Life research
approaches. Examples for such fields are the social sciences, systems
biology and bioinformatics. Contributions are not limited to reports
of completed research, but may also describe ongoing research, fresh
concepts and ideas, or identify and discuss open questions, such as to
allow early interdisciplinary input and interactions with respect to
these issues.
Submissions
-----------
Contributions are invited for oral and poster sessions. They should be
submitted as articles (up to 10 pages) or as extended abstracts
(typically 2-3 pages), formatted according to these instructions. All
submissions will be peer reviewed. Electronic submission of PostScript
documents is strongly encouraged. Hardcopy submissions should be sent
in three copies to the following address:

Computer demonstrations accompanying accepted contributions are
encouraged, as such demonstrations are frequently a suitable and
adequate means of communication about Artificial Life
systems. Contributors are kindly asked to identify their needs
regarding technical equipment as early as possible, and to make
arrangements with the local organizers.
Call for Workgroup Proposals
----------------------------
Workgroups are intended to allow in-depth discussions of specific
subfields of Artificial Life. Workgroups will be organized by
scientists or groups of scientists who are willing to give an
introductory survey of the subject. Workgroup organizers should focus
on describing the essence of the subfield, i.e. the fundamental
motivations, major approaches and achievements, open questions etc. to
the other participants. Proposals for workgroups should be submitted
as descriptions of up to three pages. Descriptions should include:
* An outline of the subject of the proposed workgroup.
* An indication what audience would be interested in participating
in the proposed workgroup.
* Some references to substantial contributions that have been made
in the subfield.
Workgroup proposals should be sent to
