TITLE: Building Large Knowledge Bases: A Critique of
Lenat's CYC Project
WHO: Tim Menzies
AI Lab, UNSW
WHEN: 1-2pm, Friday, 25 Sept, 1992.
ABSTRACT: Attempts to understand the strengths and
flaws of Lenat's CYC project (in which it is
planned to encode to background knowledge
required to understand 1000 one paragraph
entries from an encyclopedia) are limited by
a lack of technical publications by Lenat
regarding CYC. Unlike other KR theorists
(e.g. Brachman & Levesque), Lenat does not
publish detailed formal reviews of his
representation. Given this lack of informa-
tion, alternative approach is to review the
major strands of non-Lenat KR theory and pose
the question "how much of contemporary KR
theory is used/ addressed by CYC".
This seminar will review the KR strands known
to the speaker: knowledge fragments, OO-KR,
task-analysis, Clancey-style blackboards, and
knowledge-in-context. Some of this work has
been spectacularly successful in building
large knowledge bases (though none on the
scale of CYC). We will conclude that CYC
seems to ignore much of the useful KR
research performed since the inception of the
CYC project.
WHERE: Rm 212, Samuel Building, University of New
South Wales. Enter off Botany Street, stop at
gate and ask grey men for day pass and
instructions. Park in the main car park on
your left. The Samuels building is the gray
building directly behind the gates with
strange shield-like objects over the windows.
