             TACART

TOPIC: Generic Programming, Partial Evaluation,
             and a New Programming Paradigm

SPEAKER: Dr. Christopher Landauer
             Aerospace Integration Science Center
             The Aerospace Corporation

DATE: 19 November 1997 (Wednesday night)

TIME: The talk will begin at 7:30.

PLACE: Loyola Marymount University, Pereira Hall 14.
LMU is located at Loyola Blvd. and 80th Street in
Westchester. From the 405, take the Manchester exit
and proceed west to Loyola Blvd. Turn north, and
continue until you enter the LMU campus. Ask the
guard for directions to Pereira Hall. Parking is free.

ABSTRACT: "Problem Posing" is a new declarative programming style.
Programs do not "call functions", "send messages", or
"issue commands"; they "pose problems". Program do not
             have "functions", "modules", "clauses", or "objects";
they have 'resources" that can be applied to problems.
The Problem Posing Interpretation uses Knowledge-Based
Polymorphism to map from specifications to resources
that will coordinate or provide the solution. It works
well with "wrappings", a computationally reflective
             knowledge-based approach to integration infrastructure,
providing a framework for mediating information sevice
requests in a heterogeneous distributed system. A new
approach to generic programming will be described,
that uses these notions together with partial
             evaluation methods for adaptation.

BIOGRAPHY: Dr. Christopher Landauer is a mathematician in the new
Aerospace Integration Science Center of The Aerospace
Corporation. He has worked on a wide variety of topics
somewhere in the meeting place between mathematics,
computing, and linguistics. Examples are algebraic
coding theory, matroids, formal methods for protocols,
verification and validation of knowledge-based systems,
pattern detection and tracking in noise, discrete event
             simulation systems, statistical information retrieval
from unformatted natural language text, semiotic
analysis of mathematical and linguistic reasoning.
He is currently attempting to invent an "Integration
             Science" for constructed complex systems.

DINNER: No dinner is planned. No social activities are planned.
