TOPIC: Hyperspace Analogue to Language (HAL):
                 Developing a Human Memory
From 300 Million Words of USENET Text

SPEAKER: Prof. Curt Burgess
             University of California, Riverside

DATE: 04 December 1996 (Wednesday night)

TIME: The talk will begin at 8:00.

PLACE: The Ramada Hotel, Culver City, 6333 Bristol Parkway
             405S: exit Sepulveda/Centinela; 405N: Slauson/Sepulveda
             Hotel Tel # (310) 670-3200.

ABSTRACT: The Hyperspace Analogue to Language (HAL) model is a
computer simulation of human memory that goes beyond
previous ones in two ways: HAL is not given any
definitions or information about the words it receives,
and it learns from a vast stream of actual conversations
extracted from 300 million words of text downloaded from
Internet discussion groups. HAL builds a 200-dimensional
hyperspace in which it stores words. Although HAL is
unsupervised, it appears that some dimensions correspond
to meaning. For example, the closest neighbors to the word
"book" are: story, game, movie, new, film, paper, recent,
original, issue, series, and word. Models such as HAL show
that we can mimic the advantages of human memory without
having to hand build or code lookup lexicons/dictionaries.

BIOGRAPHY: Prof. Curt Burgess is on the faculty in the Department of
Psychology at UC Riverside, and has an adjunct appointment
in the Computer Science Department. He has 30+ publications,
mainly in the areas of psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics,
and computational models of memory and language. He is a
Presidential Faculty Fellow, one of 30 each year appointed
by the President of the United States through an NSF program.
He is one of only two psychologists to receive this honor.

DINNER: Social Hr at 6:30. Optional dinner at 7:00 (\$19 with a
reservation - call (310) 472-5968 by Sunday; \$21 with no
reservation). To just attend the talk (free) come at 8:00.
