TOPIC: Ontologies for Machine Translation -
Or how to build a principled interlingua
(if such a thing exists)
SPEAKER: Dr. Eduard H. Hovy, Information Sciences Institute
of the University of Southern California.

ABSTRACT: In the past year or two, the availability within AI of several
large-scale taxonomies (often called Ontologies) has generated
considerable interest, mostly for how they can be used to speed up
the construction and enhance the robustness of knowledge-based AI
systems. At ISI, we have built a concept taxonomy (the Pangloss
Ontology) that contains approx. 70,000 nodes and is linked to
lexicons of English, Spanish, Japanese, (and soon, Arabic)
words. It is used in several Machine Translation systems. This
talk describes an asymptotic and incremental approach toward true
language-independence grounded in practical concerns (such as
what a Machine Translation system requires in order to function).
BIOGRAPHY: Dr. EDUARD HOVY leads the natural language project at ISI,
a project conducting research in Machine Translation, natural
language text planning and generation, the construction of large
knowledge bases and lexicons, automated topic extraction and
summarization, medical informatics, and multimedia presentation
planning. Dr. Hove, who received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from
Yale University in 1987, is Vice President of the Association of
Machine Translation in the Americas (AMTA), serves on the
Executive Board of the Association for Computational Linguistics
(ACL), and has served on the editorial board of
Computational Linguistics.
DINNER: No dinner or social activities are planned.
