A research assistants is required for a funded research projects on Autonomous Guided Vehicles Project Title: Graph Theoretic Dynamic Modelling, Design and Model Based Control of Autonomous Guided Vehicles Project Abstract: The development of an Autonomous Guided Vehicle (AGV) and research in control, modelling and perception are the subjects of this research project. AGV systems are important sub-systems in Flexible Manufacturing Systems used for transport of materials, goods and tools. Traditional AGVs are wire guided with limited free-ranging capabilities and are subject to constraints which limit flexibility and applicability. Advanced mechatronic designs will allow advancement in free-ranging and versatile operation. Increased mechatronic complexity requires more advanced control techniques to achieve the desired accurate performance. This project focuses on problems in dynamic modelling and model based control. Graph-theoretic methods will be applied to facilitate the system modelling and formulation of equations of motion. Graph-theoretic methods also typically lead to very systematic methods of formulation of system equations. These methods are so systematic that computer programs written to implement "self-formulating" systems for modelling and analysis are greatly facilitated.Model based control using computed torque methods will be applied to the fine motion control required for the docking and materials handling phase of the operation of the AGV. Computed torque control has been shown to give dramatic improvements in speed and smoothness of motion for robot manipulators. An autonomous guided vehicle with auto-leveling and materials handling capability requires simultaneous control of interacting subsystems to achieve safe and controlled manipulation of loads and objects. The research projects are supported by well equiped laboaratories, computer facities and libray services. Candidates: 1. Should have completed or will soon complete an undergraduate degree (or higher degree) in electrical or mechanical engineering, mechatronics or closely related discipline. 2. Ideally have a background or good knowledge in mechatronics (electronics, mechanical design, computer control), realtime systems, intelligent systems and software engineering. 3. Will be strongly encouraged to register for a higher degree (MPhil/PhD). Terms and Renumeration: 1. Initial appointment for 1 year, with renewal upon demonstration of satisfactory progress. 2. Renumeration commensurate with experience and qualifications. Current starting salaries: - Research Assistant - HK$13,415/mth (approx exchange rate : 7.8HK$ =3D 1US$) - Senior Research Assistant - HK$16,860/mth To Apply: Interested applicants should forward their resum=E9s to: Dr. Sherman Lang Dept. of Manufacturing Engineering & Engineering Managemant City University of Hong Kong Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong Tel: (852) 2788 7827 Fax: (852) 2788 7660/8423 Email: melang@cityu.edu.hk
