I have begun work on a dissertation on user modeling and direct
manipulation interfaces.  I'm interested in implicit acquisition (i.e.
watching the user and inferring preferences, goals, knowledge, bugs,
whatever). I haven't decided on an application.  Although I was
considering an intelligent interface application, recently I've begun
to favor an application which functions as an aid to the designer of
an application or a user interface. The user model would "bolt on" to
an existing application or prototype, it would watch the user(s) of
the system, amalgamate the relevant data, describe or recreate user
behaviors or classes of users, make recommendations about problem
areas or design changes, and serve as an application design aid to the
system designer.  Is anyone currently working on such a program or
know of any similar research?  Is this idea hopelessly difficult, too
simple for a PhD, too useless to anybody any good, already available
through your local dealer, or all of the above?  Thanks in advance for
