Announcing the release of An Organic Programming Language GAEA Version 1 http://cape.etl.go.jp/gaea/ ``Organic programming'' is a new software methodology modeled after the flexibility of organic systems such as plants and animals. It was developed at ETL with the goal of providing mechanisms for situated inference by software agents that perform computations in cooperation with each other. The idea of organic programming is a combination of - situated reasoning, - module manipulation, and - reflection. GAEA is a programming language based on organic programming, a new software methodology designed for constructing complex yet flexible structures of program modules. The base language for GAEA is designed after the concept of situated inference. We designed the syntax and the semantics of the language to be a superset of Prolog where possible. As the result, most Prolog programs can be translated into GAEA with ease. However, there are many extra features. The most significant ones are: - module structure of ``cells'' with meta-level primitives for manipulating cell structures - partially specified terms called ``@-infons'' - built-in X-window interface - multithreading processes - cell variables for thread communication - network interface for a distributed, multi-processing environment. Conditions for using Gaea System: 1. This version of Gaea System is still under developing and may have serious problem. Neither Electrotechnical Laboratory (ETL) nor development staffs of Gaea System provides warranty. Use the software at your own risk. 2. Copyright of all program code and documentation included in source or binary package of Gaea System belongs to ETL. 3. You can use Gaea System for research purpose only, commercial use is not allowed. 4. If you want to re-distribute Gaea System to someone, you should inform us of destination of re-distribution to the address gaea@etl.go.jp. via e-mail.
