             TACART

TOPIC: Verification and Validation of
             Expert and Knowledge-based Systems

SPEAKER: Prof. Daniel E. O'Leary
             University of Southern California

DATE: 19 February (Thursday night)
[IMPORTANT: note the unusual day of the week.]

TIME: The talk will begin at 7:30.

PLACE: Loyola Marymount University, Pereira Hall 31.
LMU is located at Loyola Blvd. and 80th Street in
Westchester. From the 405, take the Manchester exit
and proceed west to Loyola Blvd. Turn north, and
continue until you enter the LMU campus. Ask the
guard for directions to Pereira Hall. Parking is free.

ABSTRACT: Development of expert systems and knowledge-based systems
has made data available to analyze those systems. This
talk will investigate two topics that derive from the
availability of such data sets. The first data set allows
us to analyze the empirical relationship between errors
and the size of the KBS. In addition, we are able to
analyze relationships between errors to examine questions
such as "does the existence of one error signal the
probability of another error?" and "does the number of
errors of one type signal the number of errors of another
type?" The second data set allows us to examine the
existence of conflicting knowledge in multiple agent
systems. In so doing we are able to develop new methods
             for identification of conflicting knowledge.

BIOGRAPHY: DANIEL E. O'LEARY is a Professor on the faculty at the
University of Southern California. He is editor of IEEE
Intelligent Systems (formerly known as IEEE Expert). Dan
received his Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University
in 1986 and joined USC in 1985. One of Dan's primary
research interests is in the area of verification and
validation of expert and knowledge-based systems. His
recent research has focused on verification and
             validation of multiple agent systems.
