I'm afraid I have no input on the problem you noted but I have
had problems with that model DAT in the past and subsequently
found article Q138085 in the NT Knowledge Base which explained
the problems I had in appending volumes on the tapes. The
firmware version of this model drive that made it on the
compatibility list was v3.02 (which does indeed work fine in NT)
while v3.26 introduced the bugs dealing with appending volumes.

Although this problem is seemingly unrelated to yours it may
provide sufficient reason for you to return that drive while you
have the opportunity if you do indeed have a v3.26 SDT 5000. In
my case I exchanged it with an SDT 5200 which proceeded to work
without any problems at all.

Hope this helps,

Dan
