Software for HP C1533A

Hi out there

I have a HP C1533A with an AHA2940 PCI SCSI Controller.

Now I'm looking for backup software. The problem is, I'm using DOS/Windows,
Win95, WinNT an finally WARP on the same machine. Till this point of time I
have not found any Software that can read tapes that have been written using
another operating system.

At this time I'm using Sytos under WARP but what to do when my WARP Partiton
dies? It would be good to restore the partion using dos/windows for example.
Or NT?

I hope, you can help.

I once tested the familly of Cheyenne software (ArcServe /NT,
Arcserve for OS/2, Arsolo /DOS & Arcsolo /win) and all worked
fine with an adaptec 1740 & HP C1533A.

Since then i left the company but think they are now using it.

I can't help with the DOS/Windoze part, but I understand that by now
most backup software solutions provide disaster recovery. Sytos premium
does, according to their spec sheets, Nova back does, BackAgain/2 does, etc.
This may be something newer versions than yours do -- check the docs.

As I was told, even on OS/2 Warp each of these programmes has its own
proprietary data format, i.e. you can't interchange / restore data unless you
have the same software used to back it up. I would expect even less success
when using different programme loaders (DOS FAT), graphical operating
environments (Win 3.x), operating systemlets (Win '96 FAT/VFAT kludge),
or even operating systems (UNIX/LINUX with a boat load of file systems,
NT FAT/HPFS/NTFS, Warp FAT/HPFS) with different file systems.

There are a few solutions (like BakupWiz, I believe) which claim portable
data formats between the supported platforms, and then there is the UNIX tape
archive utility tar, for which a GNU port exists -- gtar. This has been
ported to many platforms, including OS/2, and I understand that the data
format *is* portable and readable as long as you use tar.

So. Does that help? Stefan

Tar is the end-all to human existence IMHO. I use the DOS port, there is an
OS/2 bersion, and I believe an NT version.
