We had a 44 here at usc for a long time. We used it as a general purpose system from engineering and also had an analog computer and Adage Graphics computer attached via a channel box called an 1827. It behaved like a lot of registers and a/ds. we also attached it to the arpanet via a 'UCSB' network interface We wrote our own version of a system called ps44. The machine was blazing fast for its time and the replacement ibm wanted to sell us (370/145) was about the same speed. The lack of a good follow on in price was the start of our path down dec10s then other unix based systems. The expansion core (where the regs where in slow mode) was an interesting beast. If you bought the commercial feature that added several hardwired instructions that were missing (lm,stm bxle etc) but the mvc instructions were emulated by a program in bump core. This memory was also addressable by diagnosis instruction so we used it for table space and buffers instead of running the emulator. We bought the commercial feature for the instructions like load an store multiple plus the storage protect instructions. It was a real fun machine to work on since it was really the forerunner in some ways or risc and ware interesting to debug since it all in hardware. Lots of scope time. amazing what was done in 128kB of memory. jim pepin
