rumor has it that some archie server sites are still trying to sync their
files off of the mcgill server, and as such are some number of months
behind the times. truth? fiction? you decide. (and fix too please
if it's possible)

Hmmm, that might explain archie not being able to find some things
today. (FYI, my default archie server is at SURAnet.)

No, this wouldn't explain the problem, the SURAnet server has never sync'd
off of another site, we retrieve all of the listings ourselves.

It is possible that the site which had the file you were looking at had
not been updated yet. We update our sites on about a monthly basis, any more
than that would put too much of a load both on the archie machine and on
all of the anonymous ftp servers. It is also possible that the site is
simply not in the database, this can happen because we don't add things
to the database unless requested by the site themselves.

However since you have had a problem, I would ask you to send mail to
archie-admin@sura.net describing what you were looking for, and we
can see if the problem is still happenning.

Indeed if anyone has a problem using our server, they should send mail
to archie-admin@sura.net. If you have a problem using another server,
you should be able to reach those people by sending mail to
archie-admin@<their archie machine>
