I am working on a paper which will be submitted to Nature. I want to acknowledge use of NIH Image and NCSA Image, image processing programs for the Macintosh. There aren't any published papers I can reference, but I want to give a name for the program which will be of general use in finding the program. I had hoped to give a name which can easily be found using Archie, but I looked, and the file name for NIH Image is just Image144.hqx, and it changes every month or so when a new version comes out. I realize that the person who creates the file on the FTP server controls the name. How about some alias mechanism for Archie? I would like to say "... using the widely available public domain programs 'NIH Image' and 'NCSA Image' for Macintosh" and not really need to say any more. Right now, I have to say something like "available at alw.nih.gov" but wouldn't it be better not to direct people to a specific site? -- Edward J.
