There are no PD or shareware programs that do exactly what Stacker does.
However, in the commercial market, competition seems to be getting
fierce, resulting in lots of features and lower prices.

I did evaluate a program called NEWSPACE which is available at
Simtel-20, but I found it to be unreliable, and my attempts to contact
the author have failed.

A freeware program called DIET (DIET144.ZIP at Simtel) has the ability
to intercept file-open calls and compress or decompress files as they
are read or written.  This may suit your needs very well, or it may not.
It probably will not work with Windows.  However, I have found that for
some uses it works extremely well.  You might like it, too.  Can't beat
the price.  :)
