So, how big ARE the archives?

Hello all,

First, this is more of a trivia sort of "I'm interested" question.
My room mate and I the other day were having a discussion about some
of the major ftp archive sites around, such as wuarchive, simtel 20,
garbo, cica, etc., and the point came up about exacltly how much storage
space these ftp sites have on-line, available to the user. There's such
a vast quantity of programs and information on these sites, we were just
wondering exactly how big they are. I know that simtel at least has to
be around 600 megs or so, because of the periodic CD-ROM of the archives
that is released now and then.
Again, just curiosity. Thanks for any replies.

This is our MsDos section at Garbo given by du disk blocks. As you
can see from the in relative terms low totals, we tend to specialize
a bit. (The /unix directories are given also after the /pc

While it's not the biggest, it'll give you some idea of big and small are.
f.ms.uky.edu is the site.

I just wonder too that how many percent of files at Simtel and Garbo
are duplicated. This may save a lot of space for some sites,
such as wuarchive that mirror both BIG sites.

Well, the simtel20 disk only has the MSDOS-stuff from simtel, and I think
there's other archives as well. So there's more than that 600M. And cica..
the cica Windows3 disk has about 200M programs on it (June 1992 edition).

We are sometimes asked questions about coordination between the two
sites. The standard reply is that we cooperate, but we do not have
the time for excessibe coordination. Furthermore the cost of disk
space is going down. Not so with moderation. Besides we reside on
different continents.

   All the best, Timo

ftp.cica.indiana.edu [129.79.20.84] has approximately ~300Mb of disk
space now devoted to Windows programs and utilities. This ~300Mb
resides on a half-gigabyte disk. So we've got approximately ~160Mb
left before we have to do some shuffling...

In terms of total storage space here on-line to the department, the
ftp partition is on one drive of several in a disk farm that comprises
over 17 gigabytes (16,616,318Kb) of shared file space. But that's
probably more than you wanted to know. ;-)

What can we the users do? Its seems that Garbo is really the place to send
source code, while Simtel is the place to send shareware/freeware type
programs. Is this a good rule to use, or should we send them to both?
