Are there better versions of my old DOS tools?

Some of my old DOS utilities are running out of steam with problems such as running out of memory when trying to log the contents of the newer GByte sized disks. Can anyone tell me whether the versions I have are the best that were released under DOS or if better versions are available (and from where?). These are the ones I am most interested in: 1) XTreeGold Version 2.00 2) The Norton Utilities Advanced Edition 4.50 3) FastLynx, Version 1.02 Published by Rupp Corp. Certainly your Xtree is old in the tooth I use 4.5 for dos, and Norton
v7 for dos, if you use win 95 you need at least Norton utilities for win
95 or version 2, v7 for dos and 3.11 will not allow you to use some of
the functions if you have Win 95.

Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today, if you
do it today and like it, you can do it again tomorrow.

I use XTree v3.0 for dos and think it's brilliant. After seeing your
message I immediately rang Symantec (0171 616 5600) to ask about an
upgrade, but they said the last dos version of XTree was 3.0
(development now discontinued). Are you refering to XTree v4.0 for
windows ?
Has another company taken over development ?
Pete.

!! BRILLIANT !!
I have been a long term fan of XTREE since version 1.0 first came out
(way back in the dim and distant past), tried the windows (version 4.0)
and hated it so stuck at DOS version 3.01. Windows Explorer is Ok if
you're happy with pretty pictures and no info. on what you're doing,
after Xtree it's like working with your eyes closed and one hand tied
behind your back !! If you've ever used Xtree you'll know what I mean !
It was a sad day when Symantec effectively killed it off.
Ztree is available from the demon ftp archive at :
ftp.demon.co.uk/pub/simtelnet/win95/fileutl/ztw111.zip
and it's just as Matthias says, an Xtree clone, in all but the finer
details, but is a full Windoze 95 32 bit application and understands
long file names ! The author, Kim Henkel, states '...given time and
incentive I intend to provide all the missing functions...'. Having
downloaded and tried Ztree for a couple of hours this evening I'm hooked
and certainly intend to give him my support !
If you've ever bemoaned the demise of Xtree give Ztree a try and give
Kim the incentive to revive it back to the product it used to be !

This thing is packed with many indispensible utilities, without any need of the Windoze overhead. However after Centrol Point Software had been bought by Symantec, Pc Tools 9 is the last of this excellent package, without ever reaching a complete 10. And the rest is history for CPS. The only giant remains in the utility business is the overpriced Norton products. :(
