Archive-name: auto/comp.protocols.appletalk/A-Remote-Network-Server-for-AppleTalk-Async-AppleTalk-2-0 I am pleased to announce the release of stage one of "A Remote Network Server" for AppleTalk. The ARNS package contains two Macintosh clients; Async AppleTalk 2.0 and IPRemote AppleTalk which allow suitably connected Macintoshes to access AppleTalk services via "A Remote Network Server". The ARNS server runs on a UNIX host that is connected to an EtherTalk network. Async AppleTalk uses an asynchronous serial line connection to a UNIX host (ie: via modem or direct serial line) and a UNIX program called 'async' to connect to the ARNS server. IPRemote AppleTalk uses MacTCP 1.1 on an ethernet equipped Macintosh to achieve similar connectivity. Connections using either method may be made over a wide area IP network such as AARNet or the Internet. Both Async AppleTalk and IPRemote AppleTalk are clients of the Network Control Panel and are compatible with either System 6.0 or System 7.0. NB: The Network Control Panel installer software is not included. The ARNS UNIX server runs under SunOS, DEC ULTRIX 4.N, Sony NEWSOS 4.2 and SGI IRIX using either Phase 1 or Phase 2 EtherTalk. Server access may be restricted with an optional server password and/or an IP address filter list. The server must be run by a super-user. The ARNS package is available via anonymous FTP from munnari.OZ.AU by following the steps ... cd mac binary get arns.tar.Z Installation instructions are contained in the README file. User level documentation can be found in clients/userDoc.hqx (Microsoft Word format). For demonstration purposes, an open-access server is running on the host mullala.cs.mu.OZ.AU, the access password is "remote". The server provides access to various AppleTalk services including an AppleShare volume and a LaserWriter spooler. Feel free to submit print jobs, but please limit the output to a single page. Please also keep in mind that the US to Australia satellite link is 99.99% busy from 0800 to 1800 AEST (ie: 1500 to 0100 PDT). The ARNS package is Copyright (c) 1992, The University of Melbourne. For their encouragement I would like to thank Peter Thorne, Iain Morrison, Chris "Macintosh From Hell" Chaundy, Rodney "Compression" Van Cooten, John O'Neill, Yasuaki Honda, Matthew Lewis and a squadron of beta testers unfortunately too numerous to list. If you have any problems or questions, please email djh@munnari.OZ.AU - David.
