Archive-name: auto/comp.os.os2.programmer/Beta-Release-of-Sound-Blaster-Device-Driver I am announcing the release of a OS/2 V2.0 device driver for the Sound Blaster and Sound Blaster Pro. I have a brief description of the driver posted below. I am looking for people who want to test the driver for me on their systems. The driver is available via anonymous ftp on astro.as.arizona.edu [128.196.176.1] in the directory /pub/SBOS2. Look for the file sbos2v09.zoo. In addition to the device driver, i've included a PM based utility to control the mixer portion of the SB Pro. Additionally, I have included a multi-threaded version of a unix .MOD player. These supplemental programs require EMX v0.8e to compile. michael fulbright msf@as.arizona.edu Description follows: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ SOUND BLASTER (tm) OS/2 DEVICE DRIVER VERSION 0.9 Michael Fulbright (msf@as.arizona.edu) (SOUND BLASTER is a trademark of Creative Labs, Inc.) INTRODUCTION ------------ Currently there is a lack of free SB programming tools under OS/2. This package is intended to help rectify this problem by providing a Sound Blaster device driver for OS/2 V2.0. The SBOS2 device driver has the following features: - Uses the standard file system commands DosOpen, DosRead, DosWrite, and DosClose to sample and playback digitized sounds. - (SBPro only) Provides direct access to on board mixer - (SBPro only) Stereo playback - Double buffered DMA sampling/playback with 64k buffers. - Allows development of Sound Blaster software using a high level language, such as Cset/2 or GNU GCC. - Requires no additional development tools (include files, libraries, etc). GNU GCC is all you need. The device driver (called SBOS2.SYS in this document) can be built from the supplied sources using MSC 5.0 or later, and MASM 5.0 and later. It does not require any special development toolkit or libraries. The IBM Cset/2 compiler should also work, although this has not been tested. REQUIREMENTS ------------ This driver is intended for OS/2 V2.0, and will not work with earlier versions of OS/2. The driver is intended primarily for the SB Pro, but it will also work with the original SB and the plethera of SB clones. WARNING As this driver has only been tested on my system, I must warn you to use it at your own risk. I believe it is stable and in my experience I have yet for it to cause any data loss. To build the device driver you will need a Microsoft compiler, or IBM's Cset/2, as well as Microsoft's MASM compiler (or IBM's equivalent). I believe it is possible to compile with Borland compilers, but I havent tried it. I am willing to try to help someone compile the driver under a Borland compiler. However, unless you want to change something about the device driver, the included SBOS2.SYS should be all you need. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
