I just thought I'd announce this here, as there may be people
interested and I can't think of any more suitable place...

PCRobots is a program I wrote several months ago, it's an enhanced
PC-only version of CRobots, but it'll run robots written using any
standard DOS compiler/assembler (eg Borland C++, Turbo C++,
Microsoft C, Turbo Pascal, QuickBasic, MASM etc). It has all the
old CROBOTS functions, plus lots more for inter-robot
communications, finding the way around a definable arena (rather
than the plain open arena that CRobots was limited to). It also
has a better graphical display - but this means you need an EGA
or VGA display to use it.

The program uses a cooperative multitasker to switch between
robot tasks (which are .COM or .EXE files - this means that only
certain functions (like scanning, moving or shooting) cause the
next robot to run, so a robot can do complex calculations without
being penalised. Also, because the programs are executables it
means that they can be distributed without giving away all your
algorithm secrets.

An earlier version of this program was used as the basis for a
competition run by a magazine in the UK (and they got an
overwhelming response - literally...), so I thought I would make
it available to the world at large.

The original CRobots was intended as a learning aid to C -
PCRobots *isn't* (you have been warned... :-) ).

It should be available for anonymous FTP from ftp.demon.co.uk
sometime soon (I've only just uploaded it there so I don't yet
know what directory it will be in).
