Archive-name: auto/soc.culture.indian.telugu/Release-of-Rice-Inverse-Transliterator-Software Release of Rice Inverse Transliterator Software This is to announce the release of the Rice Inverse Transliterator (rit), a free software package for processing text consisting of Telugu and English. This software is now in the public domain and is accessible by anonymous ftp. (Instructions to get the software below.) rit is a typesetting software with the following capabilities: 1. distinguishing English words from Telugu words. 2. translating some English words into Telugu. 3. transliterating some English words into Telugu. 4. correcting spellings in transliterated Telugu. You will find this software useful if 1. you post or read messages containing Telugu on s.c.i.t 2. you cannot write Telugu but can speak it 3. you write letters in Telugu (with English mixed) 4. you write stories/poems/.. in Telugu 5. you want a small on-line English-to-Telugu dictionary. Briefly, this software takes text like maa school ee city lo kallaa peddadi and prints it in Telugu and English appropriately. It can also translate school into baDi and city into nagaram. To run this software, you need 1. a Unix machine with LaTeX installed on it 2. and not much more, really. Ideally, you should have a terminal with X windows or openwindows. Window capability is required only to see the output on the screen. You can still use the program without xpreviewers like xdvi or xview, but then you will waste a lot of paper. If you have access to a Sun workstation (with LaTeX), for example, you should be set. To use this software, you 1. need not know how to use LaTeX 2. need not have installed TeluguTeX 3. need not be a Unix expert. This software is free and is in the public domain, BUT COMES WITH NO WARRANTY. To get this software, you need to do the following: If someone else in your site has already installed rit, you need to get only the file "ritinstall.txt". Otherwise, you need to get only the file "rit10tar.Z". You can get these files by anonymous ftp from 134.129.123.1. For example, if you decide to get "rit10tar.Z", you do the following: % ftp 134.129.123.1 Type anonymous at the Name prompt and your userid at the Password prompt. Then, ftp> cd dua1:[dviln03.andhra] ftp> binary ftp> get rit10tar.Z ftp> quit % uncompress rit10tar.Z % tar -xf rit10tar % cd rts % more README etc. The file is rit10tar.Z and not rit10tar.z (Notice the upper case Z). And the directory is dua1: and not dual: outside the square brackets, it is the numeral 1 (one), inside it is the letter l (ell). Here is a typical session: %ftp 134.129.123.1 Connected to 134.129.123.1. 220 Service ready for new user. Name (134.129.123.1:kishore): anonymous 331 Username Okay, need password. Password: 230 User ANONYMOUS logged in, proceed. ftp> cd dua1:[dviln03.andhra] 250 Requested file action okay, completed. ftp> binary 200 Command Okay. ftp> get rit10tar.Z 200 Port 128,42,49,2,18,252 Okay. 125 File status okay; about to open data connection. 226 Closing data connection. local: rit10tar.Z remote: rit10tar.Z 141312 bytes received in 17 seconds (8 Kbytes/s) ftp> quit 221 Service closing control connection. %uncompress rit10tar.Z %tar -xf rit10tar %cd rts This software is currently configured as a front end to TeluguTeX, but you are *not* required to have installed TeluguTeX. You are free to distribute rit software without any charge. We hope this software will be useful to you, Rama Rao Kanneganti Ananda Kishore
