Here's my current anonymous ftp site list.  It gets hacked
up every so often, but there has been no huge amount of
effort put into keeping it 100% up to date or accurate.

The comp.archives stuff is a much more thorough attempt to
keep track of a lot more information about each archive site.
Unfortunately it seems doomed because of a long lag time between
the time an interesting thing shows up on the net and the time
someone notices.

A more reasonable approach would be for some responsible person
to watch each newsgroup & maintain a similar list of archive
sites on a group-by-group basis.  Jon Granrose (odin@ucscb.ucsc.edu)
has done this for comp.graphics.

Note: if you don't have anonymous FTP access yourself but you
are a uunet customer, they will FTP stuff for you and then uucp
it to you.
