Archive-name: auto/bionet.announce/C-elegans-genome-database-ACEDB-available-via-WAIS All information from the nematode Caenorhabditis genome database ACEDB release 1-12 is now available via a WAIS server from Massachusetts General Hospital. ACEDB was created and is maintained by Richard Durbin (rd@mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk) of the MRC-LMB in Cambridge, England and Jean Thierry-Mieg (mieg@crim.crim.fr) in Montpellier, France. ACEDB includes an extensive list of strains, alleles, genes, recombination mapping information, cosmid and YAC physical map, bibliography of C. elegans literature, cosmid and cDNA DNA sequences plus much more. The UNIX workstation versions of ACEDB are availble via anonymous ftp from ncbi.nlm.nih.gov (130.14.20.1) in the repository directory. Inquires about the ACEDB software or the ACEDB database should be directed to Richard or Jean. The C. elegans physical map has been converted to text pictures for the WAIS database. Genetic Map and DNA sequence graphic displays that are available with the ACEDB workstation software are not provided by the WAIS server. However the underlying information used to create these graphic displays are provided by the WAIS server. I have modified the WAIS indexing so that non-alphanumeric characters can be used in searching. For example you can search for the clone "CR#L2-1". The ACEDB WAIS database is also available through a Gopher server that provides access to the Arabidopsis thaliana database AAtDB. WAIS and Gopher use special client software on an Internet connected computer to access the remote information server. Client software is available for most types of personal and workstation computers, as well as, mainframes. The WAIS software for Macintosh, Unix and NeXT is available via Anonymous FTP from think.com. DOS, SunView and VMS clients are available from samba.oit.unc.edu. A IBM RS6000 client are available from ans.net. Gopher clients are available from boombox.micro.umn.edu. An excelent Macintosh client written by Don Gilbert is called GopherApp and available from ftp.bio.indiana.edu in the /util/gopher/gopherapp directory. For a WAIS client just point to the host weeds.mgh.harvard.edu and the database named is ACEDB. For a Gopher client just point to the host weeds.mgh.harvard.edu. A public account with access to the Arabidopsis Gopher server (which includes the ACEDB WAIS) is provided by the Department of Molecular Biology at Massachusetts General Hospital. If the appropriate WAIS or Gopher software cannot be obtained for your networked computer this special account on ochre.mgh.harvard.edu will give you access. Simply use the command "telnet ochre.mgh.harvard.edu" to connect with MGH, username "gopher" and the password "thaliana". This public account should provide a useful service to the large amount of biological information that is becoming available via WAIS and Gopher. Sorry there is no public modem access to this account. I recommend that you obtain the client software for your computer so that files can be retrieved and printed on your local system. The public gopher account on Ochre does not allow files to be retrieved or printed. A public access WAIS server that allows files to be retrieved and then mailed is provided by Thinking Machines. Telnet to quake.think.com and login with the username "wais". Here is the specific information on the ACEDB servers: WAIS: (:source :version 3 :ip-name "weeds.mgh.harvard.edu" :ip-address "132.183.190.21" :tcp-port 210 :database-name "ACEDB" :cost 0.00 :cost-unit :free :maintainer "curator@frodo.mgh.harvard.edu" ) Gopher: Name=ACEDB, A Caenorhabditis elegans Database Type=7 Port=70 Path=7/.index/ACEDB Host=weeds.mgh.harvard.edu If you have questions or need more information about AAtDB or the ACEDB WAIS server please do not hesitate to contact me.
