It's official!  A couple days ago, I received a message from my ex-manager,
Fred Swartz.  He ended up at Merit/Michnet, which is a network made up of
Michigan's universities and colleges.  They are going to support the archives
here at the University of Michigan!  All of the letters of support that you
folks sent helped the administration realize how important this service
is to not only the U-M campus, but the Internet world as well.

Nothing will be "going away", as far as our archives are concerned.  Services
will most likely be >added<, such as Gopher, and we already have WAIS
service, and hopefully maybe a new machine or two.  "Support" means they
will be paying for the disk space on our AFS file servers.  You can reach
the archives right now in /afs/umich.edu/group/itd/archive/mac.   
  
I'll let you folks know more as I find it out myself.  There is supposed to
be a large article being written about the archives in the Newsletter here
on campus.  Around that time, I'll let you know what address you can 
send e-mail to obtain a copy.  We got the bill for our DEC, which is the
usual ftp machine that has been out in the shop for about a month now.  So I
would be expecing the DEC back some time very soon now.  When that happens
the "dir" and "ls -l" problems will magically go away.

Here are the files that we've added in the past week or so.... I'll be out
in Cupertino/the Bay Area again starting Saturday and going through 
Thursday.  But if you run into any problems, "comments@mac.archive.umich.edu"
is an address you can send e-mail to for help.  Try to keep our archivists
busy as well, you can ftp new files into the "incoming" directory anytime, 
24 hours a day.
