How to download from telnet BBS?

How does one go about downloading from a telnetable BBS...that is, how
does one complete the transaction on the local site.  The BBS will
tell you to tell your local site to begin receiving but I'm evidently
unclear on how to do this.  I've tried using umodem with no
success...anyone have any ideas.  My local site is unix based if that
makes any difference.
