Login works locally, not on dialin

Hello-

I'm getting my Waffle iron back up and it's just about ready to go but 
there is a problem- I can't login remotely.

Here's the situation:

1. I can login from the console- that's what I'm doing now.

2. I dialin from my other line with another computer and the modem 
answers.   I get the result codes, messages locally but not remotely.

3. I get nothing remotely- banner, login or NEW: or anything.  All of 
these are available locally.

I've scoured the docs and the FAQ and can't find any reference to this 
problem. 

BTW- I have no problems with any other aspect of the UUCP.  Polling 
works- (duhh!! How are you reading this!), news reading works, etc.

Can anyone help me?

P.S.: fangio is on a 386 now instead of a XT- I'm getting 1100-1300cps 
from the same feed I couldn't get more than 400cps with the same setup.
The 386 did the trick!
