every time I've had it off-hook for more than an hour, it's been an accident,
and boy was I ticked when I found out.

[ it happened once when someone phoned me to wake me up for work, and I
didn't hang up the phone properly, and fell back asleep - ouch ]

I _still_ think the best plan is to phone your local phone company and ask
_them_ what their comments are - if they don't care, I sure don't.  but if
they have a policy of disabling the line after 48 hours (see Ralph's
posting) then you're better to be warned.
