ncsu dup checker/HellDiver problems

Found a problem when running ncsu and using helldiver.

Ncsu apparently does some strange thing to the news directories. After
saving off my join file (when I have finished reading news), and then
reopening helldiver, all read articles reappear.

Secondly, helldiver reports that I have 4294967295 articles in
the directory.

Also, empty newsgroups pop up. For example, I expire junk articles
hourly. I get: junk 0/4294967295.

Now, the question is: Is this a problem with ncsu or HellDiver? I
suspect the former.

Anybody have an address on the author of ncsu11?

nscu has one option for saving a control file in each directory.
The file is named nscu.ctl. Helldiver tries to convert that filename
into a number... Thus the strange article counts. If you remove all
of those files, and do not use the -hf option, Helldiver appears to
work correctly again.

If that is the case, then it sounds as tho HellDiver is the culprit.

'Tis unfortunate. The -hf option is suggested if one is receiving
news from more than one source. Not counting sbay.* swapping, I have
two news feeds.

Forgot to mention: sbay.* is a local newsgroup.

And...just after I posted this, I remembered something. If Bob's
comment is correct, how come HellDiver keeps showing me old news?

If you use the -hf optiopn or whatever, it leaves the ctl files in the
spool directories to speed up processing. Helldiver doesn't expect them
there, and doesn't know how to handle them, and thus the problem. Not
sure who you want to blame for the problem, I shouldn't have left them
there but Helldiver shouldn't try reading non-news articles.

Switch to just -h (or -s if a single feed site...)

I've learned a LOT of C since then, and hope to rewrite NSCU in the near
future implementing linked lists and possibly a more efficient approach.
Any kind of past record files, like the ctl files, will be done quit
differently and not left in the spool dirs. But first, on with uubatch...

OK, here goes. Both Helldiver and NSCU are bits of culprits here.
Helldiver does screw up a little on non-numeric filenames. NSCU on
the other hand does strange things with moving articles, etc, so
what I suspect (I need to confirm this myself) is that NSCU is updating
the timestamp on some of the article files and Helldiver goes "hey,
this article is newer than the timestamp on the NEWSRC file and it
has a small number - that must mean that the group has expired and
started filling up again - so I'll just rewind to the start of the
group". *sigh* I put this code into Helldiver to compensate for
Waffle's lack of an ACTIVE file, and it appears to be back-firing
when people are running NSCU.

I plan to make the next version NSCU-aware.

Cheers,

Rhys.
