Okay, here's the scoop.... I was hoping to release another more complete UUBatch beta this weekend but it will be delayed probably about a week or so. It is changing way to fast now, so wouldn't make much sense for me to. To date UUBatch for Waffle/Dos offers... - Batched/compressed email in uubatch 1.0.5 compatible form. Uudebat/uucdebat available for Dos as well, of course. - Batched/compressed email in the rbmail format. Rbmail was already ported and posted sometime ago. Rcbmail included. - An external compression encapsulation layer. Sites can setup and define almost ANY external compression program they want to archive mail batches. Has been tested with Arj and Zip, but will work with Lha, Zoo, and others. The savings over Unix compress are very impressive. Adebatch, an open ended compressed batch reciever, makes this possible. Only available for Waffle/Dos <--> Waffle/Dos sites at the moment unless someone ports Adebatch to Unix. (Please! Please! It should be easy...) - A news archiving option that makes use of Adebatch to compress news jobs with any external archiver of choice. Just say no to Unix compress. Use Arj.... I've seen up to a 15%-20% savings in local tests with it. Currently being added to Uubatch... - Equivalents for rsmtp, rcsmtp to recieve batched/compressed mail from sites running Smail. The ability to generate jobs (batch mail) in batched smtp form. - Support for scanning the feeds file versus repetitive command line use. Will have /uubatch= and /uucomp= options, possibly more. - Better rebatching of queued jobs. Support to rebatch adebatch jobs still needs implementing, is more complicated. - Better I/O handling (currently need enough free memory to read in whole files at once, this will change) and error handling. - I suppose is about time to think about writing docs. Hopefully in the future if I don't get bored.... - Enhanced mail batch mode (already designed) with header substitution. - Enhanced news batch mode also with header substitution. (Not yet fully designed, but idea is simple enough.) I'd like to thank everyone who has inquired, even though I didn't get back to everyone by mail. When it settles down to a working release again it'll be announced, available by mailserver, and put on Halcyon. If anyone knows of any other email batching/debatching schemes used by UUCP sites anywhere, and can get the specs on their format and what programs do what, please notify me and I'll see if I can't try to add support for them as well. --- Christopher Horn | "We're all caught in a state of decay..." chorn@eastwind.mcds.com | The East Wind +1 201 875 7063
