Formal Definition of Client-Server Architecture

There seem to be several (commercial) definitions of systems
based on the client-server architecture.

I would like to know the formal definition (which is academically accepted)
of systems based on the client-server architecture. What are the
application (system) design pre-requisistes such that one can call
a mainframe as the server and the PC as the client?
Thanks.

Richard
