Looking for standards in GIS Architectures

Dear all,

for a state of the art study, I'm looking for any description of

Client/server architecture standards definition about GIS (Geographical

IS). My questions on this subject are mainly :

Does it exist standard definitions of what much provide (in terms of
services) a GIS Server, a GIS client in a specific application
developpement (product base or not) ? if not are there some emmerging
concepts ?

Does it exist any Software products that are compliant with this standards
?
If not are there some emerging products which adopt this concepts?

Any information about the tendancies in the GIS world would be interested
for me.

Thanks in advance for your help...

Serge
