I am curious about how much work has been done to determine what is the least unpleasant-looking image degradation. Image-compression software/hardware can then be optimized to produce that kind of degradation if an image has to be seriously degraded to keep the compressed volume down. I got my idea on what one might shoot for as I was reading some railroad books which featured some excellent photography. Diesel locomotives produce clear (most of the time!) and hot exhaust, and looking through produces noticeable blurring. However, at least in the pictures I saw, there was plenty of area not in the line of sight of the exhaust, which provided good control areas. Any other "natural" examples? -- /Loren Petrich, the Master Blaster /lip@s1.gov
