How is satellite data represented?

I'm wondering how incoming satellite data is usually
represented? Specifically, I'm talking about satellites
(and ground-based sensors, for that matter) that
measure natural phenomena, like cloud cover, rainfall,
ionospheric activity, etc.

When I say "represented," I don't mean the physical
medium, which I assume is tapes, disks or CD's.
I mean is it compressed? If so, how? If not,
then what does the data look like? What is the
usual schema, if one exists?

Some background: I'm a grad student here at U of Ill. in Urbana-
Champaign working in database research. I'm interested in investigating
the possibility of representing very large data sets (like satellite
data) as iterated function sets and seeing if this would be a viable
tool to use for DBMS's.
