Keywords: Source Code, Test Files A good reference for various compression techniques is "The Data Compression Book" by Mark Nelson, from M&T Books. The book includes chapters on Huffman, Lempel-Ziv, arithmetic coding, JPEG, and other methods. It also includes source code in the book and on IBM disk for each of the compression methods it describes. I believe it also includes test files of various formats to demonstrate the methods and provide benchmarks.
