newbie question II - Empty field in a form.

As parts of a validation rule, I would like to test whether a field in a
form is empty. I've tried with:

a) if len(me!field ) then
b) if isnull(me!field)

but neither works. So my question is what have I done wrong and what is the
correct method. Also I would like on which event I should place the code. It
should be validated when the user tabs out of the field
