I don't believe the SP level should make a difference.  Since you are using
SQL auth, the domains should not matter either,

You mentioned that you can ping the IP address.  With the default SQL client
net library set to TCP/IP,  you should be able to open Query Analyzer and
connect using SQL Authentication with the IP address specified as the server
name.  This assumes the SQL Server is configured to listen on port 1433 (the
default).

If this fails, please post the error message.
