Converting old DOS dBASE to new
#11

We have some old dBase II and dBase III code we need converting
to new code. We only need to convert the FUNCTIONALITY, not
necessarily import the code. So...the syntax can differ. However,
what CAN'T change is the database and index files. Either they need
to be supported directly, or an import needs to exist.

Can anyone offer any suggestions? dBase 5 for DOS? dBase 7 for
Windows, Foxpro???

Please e-mail me directly.

Thanks,

Karl

Karl,

The best tool for dBase code and tables is dBase. If you wish to use as
much of your existing code as possible, then Visual dBase 5.6 which is
available from Inprise or ZacCatalogs as well as other outlets would be a
good choice. VDB 5.6 will run most if not all of your dBase III code with
very few changes. It does require Windoze 3.x or higher and if you run
your code "as is" you will not be taking advantage of all that Windoze has
to offer. If you choose Visual dBase 7, then your code will not run unless
you are willing to make truly major changes. dBase 5 for DOS would be an
excellent choice, but is no longer being produced. You may find a
re-seller who has some copies left on the shelf for you to purchase. Of
course, using a DOS product may limit some other options in the near
future.
Your data can be maintained in dBase III+ tables if you wish, or imported
into a more sophisticated dBase table which will give you more options and
more stable memo and index files.
Check www.zaccatalogs.com for pricing. They are usually the most
reasonably priced.

Byron, the question I have about DOS apps is whether M$ will be maintaining
backward compatibility in their next release of Windoze. If they do still
provide compatibility for DOS apps, what will be the level of
compatibility?

Steve,

What options are limited to DOS dBase in the near future? I have some dBase 4
I also possibly need converted to Visual dBase 7.

Byron.
